Snapped rod shuts landmark span that carries 280,000 vehicles daily

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - Commuters clogged alternative routes and flocked to alternative transportation Wednesday after a snapped rod forced the indefinite closure of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, used by 280,000 motorists daily.

Engineers will evaluate the damage caused when the rod and metal brace fell into the 73-year-old landmark bridge's westbound lanes during Tuesday evening's rush hour.

At least two vehicles — a car and a small truck — either were struck by or ran into the fallen rod, said California Highway Patrol Officer Peter Van Eckhardt, but no injuries were reported.

The California Department of Transportation said Tuesday that the bridge will remain closed indefinitely.

3 months for I-40 rock slide cleanup 'unrealistic'

Line Myspace title

By Jon Ostendorff • October 28, 2009

HARMON DEN — State transportation officials warned Tuesday that work clearing Interstate 40 after the most destructive rock slide in more than a decade could take longer than first expected.

The N.C. Department of Transportation also offered some early glimpses of what will be involved — from precarious cable-mounted drilling to using a contraption resembling a moon rover to traverse a boulder pile more than 150 feet high.

The slide, about three miles east of the Tennessee line, has shut down I-40 from Exit 20 to just inside Tennessee.

The agency has yet to settle on a precise timetable for the cleanup. The original estimate of three months will probably prove unrealistic, said Joel Setzer, the chief highway engineer for the region.

That means it could be February or later before the interstate reopens.

Contractor Phillips & Jordan Inc., of Knoxville, Tenn., may have specialized equipment at the site today. The company worked out the plan with rock stabilization specialists Janod Contractors of Champion, N.Y.

Two drilling rigs, called an air track and a crows nest, are designed to drill into vertical surfaces while anchored with cables and pulleys. The third piece is an excavator called a spider with three wheels attached to moon-rover-like legs.

The work is extremely hazardous.

“There are bigger slides,” said Jody Kuhne, a highway department engineer, “but none more dangerous.”

Another slide shut down I-40 for three months in 1997. That one happened two miles to the west and involved more dirt than rock.

Obama declares swine flu national emergency
Order could speed up treatments by waiving certain medical standards

Line Myspace title

MSNBC News
10-24-09

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has signed a proclamation declaring swine flu a national emergency, the White House said Saturday.

"In keeping with the administration's proactive approach to H1N1 Flu, President Obama last night signed a proclamation declaring 2009-H1N1 Influenza a national emergency," it said in a statement. "The proclamation enhances the ability of our nation's medical treatment facilities to handle a surge in H1N1 patients by allowing, as needed, the waiver of certain standard federal requirements on a case-by-case basis."

Officials described the move as similar to a declaration ahead of a hurricane making landfall.

On Friday, federal health officials said more Americans have been vaccinated against seasonal flu this fall than ever before by this time of year.

Sixty million people have gotten the winter flu vaccine — probably because they're paying more attention to flu warnings in general, thanks to swine flu. It's an unprecedented number of seasonal flu shots for October; most usually aren't given until later in the fall.

Part of it is due to supply: There are already 85 million doses of seasonal flu vaccine available, a much larger amount than usual for this early in the fall. Most years, roughly 100 million doses are used during the season.

Things to watch for during a “Declared National Emergency”

Canada Free Press
By Marion Valentine Saturday, October 24, 2009

As I predicted—though I was unsure whether it would be the H1N1 virus or the collapse of the dollar—the Communist Puppet would use something to cement his total control over every aspect of our lives.

From the day he took office, Obama and his puppet masters have been building a shadow Government with all power vested in them. The Czars he has appointed, who were not vetted and approved by Congress nor elected, now have the authority to control every aspect of American commerce.

I challenge you to look at the Executive Orders that have been signed over the last 30 years and are still in place. Also carefully read the provisions of the Violent Crime Control Act. They are listed here America In Peril and I include a partial list below.

You will see that with the Executive Orders already in place, combined with the provisions of the Violent Crime Control Act, with the stroke of a pen Obama can suspend the Constitution, the Judiciary, Elections and in effect declare himself president for life.

The next step In the wannabe dictators plan is to declare Martial Law, confiscate all privately owned firearms, round up all dissenters and move them to detention centers. Also there will be detention centers for those who have the H1N1 virus.

A series of Executive Orders, internal governmental departmental laws, unpassed by Congress, the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988 and the Violent Crime Control Act of 1991, provides additional powers to the President of the United States, allowing the suspension of the Constitution and Constitutional rights of Americans during a “drug crisis”. It provides for the construction of detention camps, seizure of property, and military control of populated areas, has whittled down Constitutional law substantially. These new Executive Orders and Congressional Acts allow for the construction of concentration camps, suspension of rights and the ability of the President to declare Martial Law in the event of a drug crisis. Congress will have no power to prevent the Martial Law declaration and can only review the process six months after Martial Law has been declared. The most critical Executive Order was issued on August 1, 1971. Nixon signed both a proclamation and Executive Order 11615. Proclamation No. 4074 states, “I hereby declare a national emergency”, thus establishing an economic crisis. That national emergency order has not been rescinded.

This, teamed with the Executive Orders of the President, enables Orwellian prophecies to rest on whomever occupies the White House. The power provided by these “laws” allows suspension of the Constitution and the rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights during any civil disturbances, major demonstrations and strikes and allows the military to implement government ordered movements of civilian populations at state and regional levels, the arrest of certain unidentified segments of the population, and the imposition of Martial Law.

When the Constitution of the United States was framed it placed the exclusive legislative authority in the hands of Congress and with the President. Article I, Section 1 of the United States Constitution is concise in its language:

“All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.”

That is no longer true. The Bill of Rights protected Americans against loss of freedoms. That is no longer true. The Constitution provided for a balanced separation of powers. That is no longer applicable.

Perhaps it can be summed up succinctly in the words of arch-conservative activist Howard J Ruff:

“Since the enactment of Executive Order 11490, the only thing standing between us and dictatorship is the good character of the President, and the lack of a crisis severe enough that the public would stand still for it.”

Next we will look at all legislation passed or attempted by the dishonest Socialist regardless if they call themselves Progressive, Liberal, Independent, Republican, or Democrat.

If you have a computer you can look up the legislation.

Here are just a few Executive Orders that would suspend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These Executive Orders have been on record for nearly 30 years and could be enacted by the stroke of a Presidential pen:

EXECUTIVE ORDER 10990 allows the government to take over all modes of transportation and control of highways and seaports.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 10995 allows the government to seize and control the communication media.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 10997 allows the government to take over all electrical power, gas, petroleum, fuels and minerals.

HARTFORD, Conn.—Connecticut officials say emergency bridge repairs in downtown Hartford have spawned a lengthy traffic jam on Interstate 84.

State Department of Transportation spokesman Judd Everhart says an expansion joint that connects concrete slabs on one piece of the highway started to come apart Thursday.

He says drivers were never in danger.

Two of the four eastbound lanes between exits 48 and 49 have been closed during the repairs, which are expected to continue into the afternoon rush hour.

Officials are advising drivers to find other routes.

More than 172,000 vehicles travel on that part of I-84 every day, making it one of the state's most heavily traveled areas.

(More incompetence and shoulder shrugging by the Douglas-Dubie Administration. - promoted by NanuqFC)

As the costs of budget cuts and deferred maintenance on local infrastructure are driven home by the emergency closure of Champlain Bridge, Vermont Gov. Douglas, other state officials and executives from Vermont businesses left the country (as far as we know).
As part of a previously planned trip they have flown to Asia in an effort to attract foreign business investors to the state. How will the news of the areas crumbling infrastructure impress potential foreign investors?

While the governor is gone state officials from New York and Vermont are left to deal with the declared emergency surrounding the Champlain Bridge closure

The Champlain Bridge was known to be in bad repair, studies were in progress and the bridge had been shut down to one lane within the last year .It seems though that few contingency plans had been made about what to do about 4,000 people that pass over the bridge daily if the bridge needed to shut down completely as is now the case. Business owners and workers on both sides of the lake are worried about the financial effect of the closure. One local hospital has patients and employees on both sides of the lake in need of transportation.

Before leaving Governor Douglas took the time to share his expert reading of the situation "Detours are time consuming and costly. This is not just about convenience; this is an economic burden as well as a safety issue,"

Extra ferries have been added and are running longer hours but winter is swooping in quickly. Hopes for a temporary bridge were put to rest by the VT Agency of Transportation spokesman John Zicconi who said

Video: Manhattan Bridge on the Move

Line Myspace title

BY STEPHANIE BARISH | wpix.com
July 28, 2009

NEW YORK (WPIX) - Many people may now be looking for alternate routes to their desired destinations after startling video surfaced on YouTube showing the Manhattan Bridge visibly swaying and bouncing under the weight of subway traffic.

The minute-long clip, which caught the attention of many people on the video-sharing website, drew a multitude of responses, many of which expressed deep concern.

"Whether the bridge is supposed to move or not," explained one commenter, "It's still unsettling to see...especially for people who have to use it every day."

A handful of others, however, presume the Manhattan Bridge was built that way in order for it to sustain its structure.

"It could be designed that way to keep the tension from building up," said another commenter.

Sam Schwartz, a former commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation, weighed in on the issue.

"The bridge is designed to rise and fall with the traffic load, so when the train passes it lowers the bridge," Schwartz told PIX News. "It's not a problem because the cables are elastic and the bridge rises once the train passes."

Schwartz said the bridge did undergo rehabilitation in the last 20 years to help correct minor problems, such as bent steel and cracks in the structure.

"All bridges do move with traffic and even weather," said Schwartz.

PIX News obtained a statement by the New York City Department of Transportation that sorts out why the bridge moves when traffic passes over.

"The bridge has moved this way for the last 100 years - exactly the way it was designed to - and it can move up to 16 inches daily with normal daily traffic conditions," the statement reads. "The long-span suspension bridge flexibility by design allows the bridge to manage the weight of the traffic and subway cars it carries and the temperature shifts that occur throughout the year."

The bridge, which crosses the East River in New York City and connects Lower Manhattan with Brooklyn, was built in December 1909. The lower level is open to three lanes of traffic, and has four subway tracks, a walkway, and a bikeway.

In addition, the Manhattan Bridge has been featured in a number of Hollywood movies including gangster epic, "Once Upon a Time in America," "Ghostbusters," "Independence Day," and "I am Legend."

Caution: Roadwork is under way

Line Myspace title

Concord Journal
By Patrick Ball/Staff Writer
Fri Jul 17, 2009

Concord - Summer is shaping up to be a busy season for Concord Public Works, which has its hands in a project or two in just about every neighborhood in town.

In West Concord, there is a Route 62 resurfacing project under way and a bridge on Pine Street that’s still closed. To the south, CPW forces are rebuilding a culvert on Wheeler Road as part of a water main extension to Verrill Farm. North of Route 2, work is about to begin at the intersection of Thoreau Street and Sudbury Road.

Meanwhile, Monument Street remains closed after the North Bridge as state contractors continue their work on Flint’s Bridge. Despite a few hiccups last fall, the work is progressing on schedule and the state’s targeted completion date for Flint’s Bridge remains spring 2010.

The 2009 roads program is also under way. As of last Friday, contractors PJ Albert were finishing up drainage and road grinding work on College Road, which was shut down and accessible only to residents who live there. Drainage work on Laurel Street began Monday, with Academy Road and Middle Street to follow. Alternating lanes and detours will be required to divert traffic away from some of the work.

“We have a lot of stuff on our plate,” CPW Director Rich Reine said in a recent interview. “When we look at the contracts we’re managing, as well as our internal forces, we have a lot of stuff going on. The weather certainly isn’t helping, but we’re right on target.”

Overcrowding blamed for Merrillville bridge collapse

Line Myspace title

ASSOCIATED PRESS
July 24, 2009

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- An engineer has determined that a northwestern Indiana pedestrian bridge did not have structural defects when it collapsed after a Fourth of July fireworks show, spilling about 50 people into a lake.

Ross Township Fire Lt. Phil Topor says the report shows that too many people were on the bridge in Merrillville's Hidden Lake Park, causing an I-beam anchoring it to break.

Investigators believe more than 100 people were on the 90-foot suspension bridge when it collapsed. About 25 people were hurt, with the worst injuries being broken bones.

Ross Township Trustee John Rooda has said the bridge in the township park should have had no more than 40 people on it.

Several of those hurt have started legal action against the township over the collapse.

Swine Flu Cases Overestimated?

CBS News Exclusive: Study Of State Results Finds H1N1

Not As Prevalent As Feared

(CBS)

If you’ve been diagnosed “probable” or “presumed” 2009 H1N1 or
“swine flu”
in recent months, you may be surprised to know this:
odds are you didn’t have H1N1 flu.

In fact, you probably didn’t have flu at all. That’s
according to
state-by-state test results obtained in a three-month-long CBS News
investigation.

The ramifications of this finding are important.
According to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Britain’s National
Health Service, once you have H1N1 flu, you’re immune from future
outbreaks of the same virus. Those who think they’ve had H1N1 flu — but
haven’t — might mistakenly presume they’re immune. As a result, they
might skip taking a vaccine that could help them, and expose themselves
to others with H1N1 flu under the mistaken belief they won’t catch it.
Parents might not keep sick children home from school, mistakenly
believing they’ve already had H1N1 flu.

Why the uncertainty about who has and who hasn’t had

H1N1 flu?

In late July, the CDC abruptly advised states to stop

testing for
H1N1 flu, and stopped counting individual cases. The rationale given
for the CDC guidance to forego testing and tracking individual cases
was: why waste resources testing for H1N1 flu when the government has
already confirmed there’s an epidemic?

Some public health officials privately disagreed with

the decision
to stop testing and counting, telling CBS News that continued tracking
of this new and possibly changing virus was important because H1N1 has
a different epidemiology, affects younger people more than seasonal flu
and has been shown to have a higher case fatality rate than other flu
virus strains.

CBS News learned that the decision to stop counting H1N1

flu cases
was made so hastily that states weren’t given the opportunity to
provide input. Instead, on July 24, the Council for State and
Territorial Epidemiologists, CSTE, issued the following notice to state
public health officials on behalf of the CDC:

“Attached are the Q&As that will be posted on the
CDC website
tomorrow explaining why CDC is no longer reporting case counts for
novel H1N1. CDC would have liked to have run these by you for input but
unfortunately there was not enough time before these needed to be
posted (emphasis added).”

When CDC did not provide us with the material, we filed
a Freedom of
Information request with the Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS). More than two months later, the request has not been fulfilled.
We also asked CDC for state-by-state test results prior to halting of
testing and tracking, but CDC was again, initially, unresponsive….

How to be a Swine Flu Vaccine Zealot

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 by: Mike Adams, the Health Ranger,
NaturalNews Editor

(NaturalNews) Swine flu vaccine zealots are like zombies... they just
keep coming at you, mindless... heartless... empty-headed and a tad
funky on the smell, too. But I've noticed from observing the behavior
of a few such zealots that not all of them fully comprehend precisely
how to act like a mindless vaccine zealot. There's more to it than just
parroting whatever the FDA says. You actually have to get with the
zealot program if you want to be taken seriously as a swine flu
vaccine zealot
.

So I've put together this handy guide to help them along:

Step 1) Loudly proclaim your vaccines
are backed by "science," but when critics ask you to produce that
science, just tell them you don't have to because "everybody knows they
work." (Then grunt and paw at the air from time to time for effect...)

Step 2) Practice scoffing. Scoffing is an important
skill for swine flu
vaccine
zealots. When someone asks an intelligent question like,
"Where are the placebo-controlled studies that show flu vaccines
work at all?" simply scoff at them. This avoids having to
answer the question because, as you know, there are no such studies.

Step 3) Practice making people feel guilty for not
getting the flu
shot. Blame them for pandemic. Just ignore the fact that the shot
itself has zero ability to actually prevent the spread of influenza and
focus on what works: Guilt!

Step 4) Spread more fear!
Guilt and fear go together like peanut butter and jelly on processed
white bread -- a favorite zombie food! In combination, they work like
gangbusters if you're trying to scare up some vaccine sales to generate
billions of dollars in profits for the drug companies.
In the absence of any actual science, just invoke fear! (Hey, it worked
for the Patriot Act, too...)

Step 5) Remind people that they are not
and therefore don't know anything. Then quote some doctor who's
pro-vaccine (and probably taking kickbacks from some pharmaceutical
company that's been caught committing a felony crime) and declare that
no one can question them because they're a doctor. Doctors are God,
didn't you know? Just ask all the victims of thalidomide... or Vioxx.

Step 6)

Strip off the plastic coating on both ends of an extension cord,
exposing the wires. Attach the two wires on one end to the temples of
your skull, then attach the two exposed wires on the other end to the
exposed slots of a live electrical outlet in your home. You are now
"WIRED." (Want a free subscription?) This process will destroy any
critical thinking regions of your cerebrum, disabling the annoying
ability to think for yourself (which can interfere with what the
vaccine industry wants you to think instead). Once achieved, you're
half-way qualified to being a vaccine zealot, unhindered by critical
thinking skills!

(Don't forget to grunt, moan and leave your mouth draping open from
time to time, or the whole effect will be ruined...)

Step 7) Defend mercury as safe.
It's not that bad, really. What's a little mercury in your shot anyway?
Ignore these inconvenient facts: A typical flu vaccine

shot solution is 50,000 parts per billion of mercury. The EPA
classifies any substance with more than 200 parts per billion as hazardous
waste
. (The EPA limit in drinking water is 2 parts per billion.)
Thus, the mercury density in a vaccine is 25,000% higher
than the level required to be considered hazardous waste. This is
injected directly into the bloodstream of infants, children, expectant
mothers and senior citizens. What could possibly be dangerous about
that?
