November 13, 2014 is the day I turned 40 and decided to start Mara Made Designs. It wasn't that simple. Nothing is I guess. I owned and ran a successful advertising business with my husband but had been struggling for years with not feeling passionate or fulfilled with the life I was living and experiencing. During that time I searched for answers to what my purpose here on this earth was. What was my passion? How do I make a difference? Why was I born Jamaican?

I got into yoga, meditated, read books, attended courses, did NLP, past life regression, hired a life coach,...you get the idea.

So back to the few months before I turned 40. I had gone to do a session with an energy reader and towards the end of our time, he asked me a simple question...what is the one thing you would do right now that would excite, energize and fullfill you? Without hesitation I said DESIGNING and CREATING! I'll never forget his reaction...he jumped up and said "THAT'S IT"! To which I rolled my eyes and told him emphatically 'I have no time for that in my life. I have a business to run and bills to pay'. He said leave that all behind...take the leap and you will see how incredible your life will become.

So I did. I went to the edge of that cliff and jumped! I closed the agency's doors in August 2014, took a few months to decompress and figure out what exactly I wanted to be designing and creating. Then just shortly after I turned 40, I had that A HA moment....

“It’s wood! I’m going to create using mother nature’s gifts!!!”

In January 2015, I bought my first chainsaw and spent the first half of the year salvaging downed or felled trees. Then in mid August I decided to put together my first collection and went straight to cutting, carving and sanding 7 days a week for 3 months. Fast forward and you can now view some of the over 100 pieces from that first collection plus several commissioned pieces.
