Since 2004, the 5000 meter world record has stood at 12:37.35 seconds. This incredible record, held by Kenenisa Bekele, is the longest lasting 5,000 meter world record in track and field history, so the question must be asked: Can anyone break this record? In a previous video, we discussed the near impossibility of breaking this record, however, one special athlete has been quickly emerging as a potential threat to this record, and that athlete is Joshua Cheptegei.
Joshua Cheptegei has accomplished almost every prestigious distance running title one could imagine in such a short time period. In 2019, he was the world cross country champion, he was the world track and field champion, and he broke the world record in the 10k on the roads (26:38). Following an amazing 2019, Cheptegei opened his 2020 with a new 5k world record on the roads (12:51). This performance was a strong indicator that Cheptegei might just be able to break Kenenisa Bekele's track world record.
2020 is going to be epic!
Thanks for watching!
