Worldcoin is a cryptocurrency project founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The project’s core offering is its World ID, which the company describes as a “digital passport” to prove that you are a real and unique person online while remaining completely private. Worldcoin consists of a privacy-preserving digital identity (World ID) and, where laws allow, a digital currency (WLD) received simply for being human. It is designed to be the world’s first digital currency of the future.
Worldcoin functioning is based on orb-shaped devices that scan individuals’ eyes and reward them with free cryptocurrency. By conducting an eye scan, a unique and confidential digital identity known as World ID is created, which verifies the user’s authenticity and uniqueness. The eye-scanning physical “orb” is necessary for a future in which distinguishing between humans and robots becomes increasingly challenging due to a surge in artificial intelligence technology. Once users have proven they are not robots, they can be issued one of the company’s tokens
