The AI data centers boom is starting to falter before it's really began. 50% of AI data projects are being delayed or canceled. This is despite already causing damage to many communities. In this episode we explore.
The Hidden Reality of Data Centers: What’s Happening in Our Backyard?
Hello everyone, it’s Buddy Huggins. If you follow my channel, you know I’ve been keeping a close eye on the data centers popping up around us here in Ozark, Missouri. Just up the road in Marshfield, a massive data center was built before most of us even knew it was coming. As someone who learns best by watching and listening rather than reading long reports, I’ve been diving into some eye-opening videos to understand the numbers and the facts behind this "AI boom."
A recent deep dive I watched reveals that the plan to build these giant "brains" for AI is hitting some major roadblocks. Even though billions of dollars are being poured into these projects, nearly half of the data centers planned for 2026 are already being delayed or canceled. It turns out that building these facilities isn't as simple as just putting up a building. They are running out of power, they can't find enough parts like transformers, and there aren't enough skilled workers to finish the jobs.
What really caught my attention were the stories about how these centers affect the people living next to them. In some towns, residents are dealing with constant loud noise, concerns about water safety, and even higher electricity bills. While the big companies promise jobs, it seems like once the building is finished, very few permanent positions actually remain. I’m not here to judge if these centers are good or bad, but I believe the public deserves to know the full story before they arrive in our community.
The future might look different than we think. Instead of these massive, noisy buildings, some companies are looking into putting data centers underwater to keep them cool or even letting our own phones and computers handle the AI work. As I use AI agents to help me overcome my dyslexia and share this information with you, I want to show that technology should empower us, not overwhelm our neighborhoods. We need transparency and honesty so that our community can grow in a way that works for everyone.
