Ozark’s Burger King Has Been Under Construction Since a Frozen Pour on January 2, 2025. The Whopper Still Isn’t Back.

Hey, it’s me, Buddy Huggins, the Buddha from Mississippi, sitting here in the Ozarks shaking my head at a Whopper that has been under construction longer than some folks stay married.

This is the Burger King at 1699 W. Jackson Street, right off Highway 65. The old store burned December 5, 2022. Ozark has not had a Burger King since. The burned building came down, and the lot sat there as an eyesore while everybody drove by wondering when the flame-broiled patties were coming back.

Here is the saga, plain and simple.
December 5, 2022. Fire. Store closes. Gone.
2023 into 2024. Demolition, waiting, more waiting. City folks later said the contractor tried to salvage pieces of the old foundation to save time. That did not save time. It made headaches.

January 2, 2025. The new foundation footer gets poured. I was there with the camera. Day of the pour was about 43 degrees. That night it dropped to 22. It stayed below freezing for five days. No weather blankets. No heaters. I never saw a test cylinder on that pour. Concrete that freezes before it cures does not get its strength. Water in the mix turns to ice, expands, and leaves you a weak, brittle mess. ACI cold-weather rules exist for a reason. That crew poured it and did not come back.

About three months later, spring 2025. A different crew shows up and pours the slab on top of that foundation. The footer had rebar. You can see it in the pictures. The slab is another story. Pieces I picked up broke in my hand. Looked short on aggregate. I did not see rebar in that slab. Google Maps photos from the site show the broken edges, the dirt, the forms, and the mess. A bad slab on a frozen footer is not a fresh start. It is weight stacked on a question mark.

May 2025. I stood up at the Ozark Board of Aldermen and asked for the records, the cylinders, and a real look. Staff said they were investigating and would ask a third-party inspector.
August 4, 2025. I went back to the board. I told them you cannot break good concrete in your hand. City Administrator Terry Johnson said third-party inspections found deficiencies, those were corrected, and the site was released to start framing that weekend. Framing started. The slab question did not go away.

September 3, 2025. Meek’s in Nixa files a mechanic’s lien for about $33,605 in materials they say they were not paid for. They sued CheckMark Construction LLC out of Blue Springs, Burger King, and the property owner, 1699 W. Jackson St. LLC, a company with a Brooklyn, New York mailing address. Lien came off December 10, 2025. Work had already stalled.

Late 2025. Answer Man Steve Pokin writes it up. Ozark is still a city with no Burger King. Permit on file. Site still fenced. People still asking.

January and February 2026. Work crawls again. Roof trusses go up. Same foundation underneath.

July 2026. Community development director Randall Whitman tells the Springfield Daily Citizen he feels confident it opens that fall, certainly by the end of the year, unless something happens. He also says trying to reuse the old foundation created headaches and did not save time. Hiring banner goes on the fence. Now hiring managers. TastyBKJobs.com.

August and September 2026. Plywood in the windows. Dirt piles. Bushes. Delays. Still not flipping burgers.
As of tonight, October 7, 2026, this saga is coming up on four years since the fire, and about 21 months since that frozen pour. They keep adding weight to a slab a lot of us watched go in wrong.
The city says third-party inspections cleared them to frame.

I say I have the video, the weather, the broken piece of slab, and the pictures. Foundation had rebar. Slab looked brittle, light on rock, and light on steel. Frozen concrete does not forgive you just because a new crew shows up three months later.
