    Richard C. Hoagland is a former museum space science Curator, a former NASA Consultant and was science advisor to Walter Cronkite and CBS News.     Comet Elenin was just discovered this past Dec. 2010 by a Russian Astronomer Leonid Elenin. The question is why media hasn’t said anything about it? They have always made a big fuzz in the past about found comets. Is it because it is going to be coming a little too close for comfort and they don’t want people freaking out? Comet Elenin Could Hit Earth. This is a possibility because of the very unstable predictions of the Comet. Preliminary predictions have Comet Elenin coming within 42 million miles of the Earth with a very favorable comet sun angle for observers in the northern hemisphere. This is likely to change somewhat as additional data will tweak the orbit, but as it stands now we will see a spectacular comet in late October or early November 2011. When Comet Elenin first was discovered in December last 2010 it was calculated to pass 8.8 Au (8.8 times the distance of the Sun form us) away. But now these calculations has once changed again. Today the orbital calculation is down to 0.24 Au with a minimum as low as 0.15. But these data is being recalculated all the time and it could get even closer but that depends what it encounters in the Oort belt. Just so you know the Moon is 0.00256 away from us to give you a comparison. We must be aware the this comet could bring enormous amount of debris with it and Earth will pass through the debris trail. This will probably take place around the 6th November 2011 or later. Could this new long period comet be the original story of Nibiru?

    Comet Elenin could be the Comet that is mentioned in the Nostradamus quatrains, and it will supposedly shed a quarter of a mile diameter shard that will then impact our planet in the area of the Azores. If this impact occur, it will then cripple much of Europe and the east coast of North America. The entire sequence was originally supposed to begin between August or October of 1999, when the comet is seen by way of an eclipse. But calendars being what they are and our inexact keep of time, the focus is now on Elenin as that mortal messenger. Content of it all is , that if a quarter of a mile (one stadias) comet fragment striking along the mid Atlantic ridge around the Azores it would cause all kinds of problems, including tsunamis, earthquakes, floods and retransmitting pieces of our own planet.

    "Deep Impact" which came out in '98. In this movie, the comet that ends up striking the earth is the very same comet mentioned in Laura's article, comet "Elenin" which (according to the movie) is named after two people, combining their names---a astronomer/scientist in Virginia Beach who died in a 'car crash' on his way to the ''proper authorities" with the information about the comet on its way to the earth (3 years before it happens) and also named after the young man who first spotted the comet in a telescope in Virginia Beach, and who told the scientist about it.
    The movie is, of course, filled with disinformation mainly designed to make us think that the PTB (a black president no less!) really care about the general masses, and have a plan for us all, and are all set to annihilate the comet with nuclear reactors, which fail and only cause the comet to split in 2 pieces--a huge one and a small one--the small one hits the Atlantic ocean and sends a Tsunami 700 miles (or is it 400?) inland--east coast of US, and the big one eventually gets blown up by the crew sacrificing their lives, flying into it with the remaining detonation of 4 nukes,

    So now along comes Comet Elenin. Let's start with the likely trajectory. On the image, which came from my astronomer friend, it looks like this:

    The little black curved line represents Mercury.

    Hopefully, it should be visible somewhere around mid-August. Its closest approach to the Sun is scheduled in the first half of September. Where it will go exactly - we do not know. Since its orbit is close to the ecliptic plane, it should be visible low in the sky. Orbital parameters are yet uncertain. So far it looks harmless:

    SpeedN-NM Comet Elenin (C/2010 X1) appears as a tiny, faint smudge in this stack of four 240-second exposures taken on the morning of December 10, 2010, with a remote-controlled telescope in New Mexico. (The quadrupled stars are due to the comet's motion between exposures.)
    It is called Elenin since it was discovered by Leonid Elenin. I expect the internet to soon be ringing with rumors and news bytes about this comet. For now, there isn't much to say so I'm sharing what I've received in private from an astronomer at a big observatory that shall remain anonymous for the moment. He says:
    1. It is too early to accurately predict the future path - it's orbital parameters haven't been revised.
    2. Among the observable hyperbolic and parabolic comets (those that come from the Oort cloud) this one has the smallest perihelion distance and the smallest inclination to the ecliptic plane.
    3. Comet Elenin's orbit may be unstable as it may encounter some dark bodies, for example, in the asteroid belt or even some Taurid objects. What would happen in those cases is a matter of luck.
    4. This comet may carry a significant amount of material with it and if it follows the currently projected orbit, the Earth may very well pass through this material.
    5. If Elenin is anything like what Victor Clube or James McCanney describes, we might be in for some surprises - good or bad, who knows?

    Comet Elenin Update!

    I've received updates on Comet Elenin from the astronomical insider who shall, as I said, remain anonymous for the moment.

    The first item of note is that, with the update on the orbit of Elenin, which was made on 09 Jan 11, that is 9-1-11 (interesting, no?), it is scheduled to reach perihelion on the 9th of September, that is: 9-9-11. Another interesting numerical combo.

    My friend has made a nice little animation of the calculated orbit:



    An interesting alignment occurs right around the autumnal equinox where we have Earth, Comet Elenin, the Sun and almost Mercury lined up like ducks.

    Now, have a look at this image:

    I hope you can make out the yellow line of Elenin's orbit. (Click on the image to enlarge it) In the image, Astronomical Insider has included the position of the asteroid belt as a big circle. He has also noted the position of the member of that belt, Schiela, which is the asteroid that began to develop a comet-like coma back in December. The blue ellipse is an approximation of the southern Taurid meteor stream. Something may change, of course, when the comet crosses the asteroid belt in March/April.
