The Buddha from Mississippi. Sitting here in the Ozarks, watching a country I do not live in catch fire on a screen, and asking the only question that still matters when the pictures get loud.
What’s really happening?
I do not have all the answers. Never claimed I did. What I do have is a report, a transcript, and a habit of not swallowing the first sentence the news hands me. The video is from ReallyGraceful, posted October 5, 2026. French flag on one side. A street fire on the other. Headline asking the same thing I am asking.
So let us walk through it slow.
**What the pictures show**
Dumpster fires. Schools shut. Riot police. A country that used to sell the world wine, bread, and philosophy now selling the world a clip of a building burning. She says firefighters are being attacked, officers chased, 24 schools scorched or ransacked, nearly 100 education staff hurt, about 5,000 arrests, and up to 500 high schools closed on Monday.
That is not a rumor she invented.
The New York Times, citing Education Minister Édouard Geffray, reported at least 24 schools ransacked or set on fire, and up to 500 schools partly or fully closed on Monday. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez told French television police had arrested more than 5,000 people since the previous Monday. Geffray put injured school staff at 78, not 100, and said 170 students were also hurt. Nuñez said more than 300 officers and gendarmes were injured. The Guardian reported about 5,000 arrests, mostly teenagers, and damage in the tens of millions of euros. In Lens, a 15-year-old lost a hand after a police stun grenade detonated. In Nantes, fire hit the Nelson Mandela high school. In one town, a fire truck was surrounded and set alight.
So the chaos is real. “Hunted down” is her heat, not the minister’s wording. The staff-injury number is a little high. The core count is not.
**What the news says it is about**
The official story is simple. Classrooms are overcrowded. Teachers are missing. Buildings are falling apart. Rats, leaks, broken desks, long days that run toward 5 or 6. Students want a school that works. Teachers want the tools to teach. Those are fair complaints. France’s own education ministry has said nearly 10 percent of public secondary teaching hours went untaught in 2024–25, mostly because they could not find a substitute.
A kid can love a walkout. I get that. What I do not get is how burning the school fixes a teacher shortage. How attacking the people who show up to teach fills an empty classroom. That part does not add up, and you do not need a degree to see it.
The government is already saying the same thing from the other side of the desk. Geffray told BFMTV the movement had been hijacked, and that teachers were looking at crowds and saying, those are not my students. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said it had gone from a high-school demonstration to a public-order problem. Officials have also pointed at the far-left party France Unbowed. So “these are not all students” is not only a comment-section theory. It is also coming out of Paris. Who the extra people are, that is the part nobody has put a clean number on.
**The money and the people**
She ties the school anger to a bigger September wave. Teachers, firefighters, hospital staff, and other public workers were already in the street over pay and the purchasing power of the euro. Unions put that crowd near 300,000. Union counts usually run hot. Treat that figure as their number, not a census.
Then she turns to immigration, because that is the sentence the polite shows will not finish.
Here the official book actually agrees with her more than the comment section thinks.
INSEE, France’s statistics office, estimated 7.97 million immigrants living in France in 2025. That is 11.6 percent of the country. “Almost 8 million, almost 12 percent” is fair. Immigrant, in their definition, means born abroad to a non-French parent. Children born in France to immigrant parents are not in that 11.6 percent. She is right about that too. Nearly half of those immigrants were born in Africa, about 30 percent in Europe. The biggest birth countries are Algeria, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia.
Where she stretches: “roughly 3 million immigrant arrivals over the last decade.” The stock of immigrants rose from about 6.2 million in 2015 to about 8.0 million in 2025. That is closer to 1.8 million more people living there, not 3 million net. Arrivals can be higher than the net, because people also leave and die. She also says authorities are guessing low on the undocumented. The 600,000 to 900,000 range is a common official estimate, and a parliamentary report has said the real total is uncertain. Guessing is not the same as proving a hidden number.
On money, she says the French Senate put about 7.8 billion dollars across 19 immigration and integration programs in the proposed 2026 budget, and that state medical aid for people without legal status, called AME, cost about 1.47 billion in 2025. Those are the kinds of figures that need the Senate PDF next to them before anybody tattoos them on their arm. France budgets in euros. The program is real. The exact dollar line is her citation, not something I have stamped.
Her point under the numbers is the one people are allowed to ask. If the school roof leaks, where did the money go? A citizen can ask that without being called a slur. Transparency is not hate. It is the receipt.
**The old pattern**
This is the part that sat in my chest.
She calls it problem, reaction, solution. Schools fail. Streets burn. Frightened people beg the same government to save them. The government keeps the power after the fire goes out.
France has done this in daylight before. After the November 2015 attacks, Paris declared a state of emergency. In 2017 the emergency was formally ended, and a chunk of those powers was written into ordinary law. The scare ended. The tool stayed. That part of her video is history, not a hunch.
She also says protest drones and AI video tools are already in the kit. France did pass a 2023 law letting cameras and software flag crowd movement, abandoned objects, and fires for big events, sold first as an Olympics measure. Le Monde has reported drone authorizations for demonstrations. How far that reaches into ordinary dissent is the live question. Her line that Macron is a former Rothschild banker who is a regular at Davos is true enough. The Kalergi “plan” she nods at is a theory people argue over, not a document I can hand you. Palantir did get French intelligence work after 2015, and Paris has talked about replacing it. The web of Nvidia, MGX, BlackRock, and everybody’s AI campus is real industry. It is not, by itself, proof that this week’s school fire was scheduled.
I can hold both. A country can be badly governed, badly stretched by migration and money, and still not be a movie script. Sometimes chaos is managed. Sometimes chaos is just what happens when trust runs out. I was not in the room where it was decided. Neither was the thumbnail.
What I am actually saying
France is not burning because a teenager wants a new desk. Some of those teenagers have a real complaint. Some of the people in those clips are not teenagers, and French ministers have said so. The injury counts, the closures, and the 5,000 arrests are in the public record. The immigration stock is in the public record. The leap from a burning lycée to a finished global plan is the part you should chew on, not swallow whole.
Order against disorder. That is the whole argument, whether you live in Ozark or outside Paris. A people who cannot tell the truth about who is in the street will accept any solution the man with the drone offers them.
I do not have the fix for France. I know what it looks like when a story is shaved down until the uncomfortable half is gone. That is what this video is pointing at. Look for yourself. Then decide.
