The Story Of Larry Kosilla And His Passion For Cars

Larry Kosilla cleaned cars in high school like a lot of people… he did it for the extra gas money for his car. He did it with a friend, Matt Farah, who like Kosilla, had a passion for cars. Kosilla went to college at the University of Virginia and majored in economics. Afterwards, he began his career working in NYC, like most of his classmates. But there was something lacking in his Wall Street job…something that just couldn’t replace his love for cars and his fascination with caring for them.
So to the dismay of his co-workers, Kosilla left his job to launch his own car detailing business with the help of his friend, and then business partner,Matt Farah. After a successful run together, Farah and Kosilla went their separate ways. Farah left NYC and headed to Los Angeles to pursue his career as an on-air car personality. Kosilla stayed in New York to develop one of the most prestigious car detailing companies in the country: AMMO NYC. AMMO NYC caters to clients whose collections contain some of the rarest vehicles in automotive history. Some of these cars are so rare that Kosilla cannot, and will not name them. To do so, would jeopardize his clients’ privacy and trust.

This is the video that lead me to meet Chris Courtney owner of  Premier Sports Cars Co.
Springfield, Missouri.  417-831-6065

Kosilla walked away from a solid Wall Street career to get on his hands and knees cleaning road grime from Borrani wire wheels. Why? Because he says, “Every car has a unique history… and some are even documented in books or magazines that we all have read about. Getting to work on them in real life is a dream come true. I literally get to restore, maintain, and even drive pieces of automotive history. How cool is that!” Kosilla is a car guy, and like a true car enthusiast, he did what he needed to do to get his hands on the cars he loves.

After years of detailing, Kosilla became obsessed with figuring out what his detailing products were made of and how and why they worked like they did.  This led Larry to work as a car-detailing consultant for a automotive-detailing manufacturer. Following this consulting assignment, Kosilla’s curiosity and determination pushed him to create his own line of product formulations. He collaborated  with a team of experienced chemists and product engineers. Together, they made several unique batches of detailing products day after day—testing and re-testing Kosilla’s formulations to achieve what he describes as, “layer-ability.”. As part of his product philosophy, Kosilla added high quality ingredients (even when it meant a more expensive product). More importantly, he removed harsh chemicals that are often shown to be too aggressive and damaging to his clients’ rare and vintage cars, but are cheaper to use when manufacturing on a large scale.  “Higher cost of raw materials wasn’t something I was concerned about.” Kosilla says. “At the time, I was only making small batches of my special products for myself to be used on my fleet of client cars…I never initially thought about selling it. People just kept asking what I was using, and it slowly started from there.”

6190201332_9fe0349153_o

With his newfound knowledge for formulating premium automotive-detailing products, Kosilla in 2012 launched a paint-regimen line of AMMO NYC, which is specifically created with the driver in mind. The regimen is based upon the concept of gently cleaning and then adding layers of protection to the paint, which provides a better looking car and also makes future washes much simpler.

Being a professional detailer, Kosilla’s propensity for OCD perfection manifests itself in the products he manufactures. Each is wrapped in beautifully designed labels that include usage directions and also small vignettes written by one his closest friends, Tad Hyde. (Hyde happens to be the original writer and brand voice of the J.Peterman Catalogue among many other beloved short stories)

Each AMMO bottle is marked with the phrase “Drive and Protect.” Yes.  That’s right. He wants you to actually drive your car. Kosilla is so adamant about this that he prefers not to engage with new detailing clients who simply want their cars cleaned and then stored away never (or rarely) to be driven. Kosilla’s philosophy behind AMMO NYC puts the celebration of car culture at the center of his brand. He advocates driving your car to the fullest; and then to clean and protect it to maximize the car’s original beauty. According to Kosilla, “Cleaning your car should be part of the joy of owning it. It can also be quite relaxing, too. Sometimes it’s nice to put on my headphones after a long day of work and spend the evening detailingmy own car. My wife thinks I’m crazy but I find it genuinely satisfying and relaxing.”

Larry Kosilla cleaning cars

In 2012, Kosilla was approached by network executives at DRIVE TV (a YouTube sponsored content channel) to create a YouTube based web series focused on celebrating car culture and educating others how to detail, care for, and protect their cars. Later in 2012, Kosilla launched his first DRIVE TV show and has received hundreds of thousands of views with an average “Like” ratio of 97%, which is almost unheard-of for YouTube. You can view past episodes at the DRIVE TV Channel: Drive Clean.

During his first season of DRIVE Clean, Kosilla’s walked viewers through a range of topics, from how to properly perform a basic “Sunday Wash,” to how to remove fine paint scratches from your car’s clear-coat. As part of his detailing approach, Kosilla  says, “It is important to have a nice quality detailing product; but if you aren’t properly using the product you have, it doesn’t really matter what’s in it…you could have the most amazing detailing products in the world, but if you’re not using them properly, you could potentially damage your car.”

In addition to his Drive Clean episodes, Kosilla creates and publishes a series of simplified “Ride Along” videos that feature him solving common detailing mistakes and challenges using some of his clients’ super cars. At the end of each video, Kosilla encourages viewers to post questions in the YouTube comment section, which he can then reply to and add more detail if needed. He also encourages car enthusiasts to subscribe to his AMMO NYC page on Facebook for additional car-care tips and links to relevant car culture.
In 2013, AMMO will unveil a new set of product regimens designed specifically to clean wheels and interiors (which are often the most contaminated parts of the car). He’s most excited about the new “AMMO Plum Wheel Cleaner, which is formulated to loosen stubborn dirt on wheels and tires. It’s pH balanced, meaning it’s soft and safe to use on any type of wheel and can be used safely on rubber tires.( Larry insists on systematically testing all his products in the field prior to releasing them to the public). AMMO Brute Wheel Soap is specifically designed to be used on wheels and should be used with a designated wheel-cleaning bucket (its formulation is too strong for a typical paint wash).

A limited supply of high quality brushes will also be released by AMMO this coming spring. These are designed to help loosen dirt trapped in the hard-to-reach areas in the wheels. Like all of his detailing formulations, Larry himself tested the brush design for months on end, soaking it in dirty water, banging it around to see if the handle would split or if the bristles would fall out.
Kosilla knows it’s not just about keeping cars clean. “Automobiles are works of art that are far too good to be kept indoors, treated like they belong in museums. They belong outdoors. They’re designed to be driven—hard—on the road.”

This Drive + Protect philosophy makes AMMO NYC products unique in that the products are formulated by a detailer who actually spends his days detailing cars;  he then invests his income into developing new products for his clients and then gives other car enthusiasts the opportunity to use them too.
Not only are new AMMO products arriving in 2013, but the highly anticipated Season 2 of Drive Clean debuts this spring. I’m also excited to say Larry will begin contributing to Cars Always with new videos and articles that will reflect his passion for cars, which is so readily seen in every AMMO product he develops.

HOW TO: Protect your fabric convertible top with CQuartz Fabric

Now that fall is in full swing and people start prepping the convertibles for the open roads, it may be a good idea to consider protecting those fabric convertible tops. Many products exists on the market however my favorite remains CQuartz Fabric. In the past I've used 303 High tech Fabric , the RaggTop product line etc.. but my best results have always been with CQuartz Fabric. There is just something about seeing it in action. Since it is a product available to the general public, I get a lot of question as to the benefits and on the "How-To" properly apply it. So I finally decided to share the pearls of wisedom.

For those that may remember the "CQuartz Fabric and Leather", please note that the company actually reformulated the products and specialized each to its own intent.

As with any coating products, PREP IS KEY! Not only do you need a very clean surface to provide the best bonding, but you also need to properly protect the surrounding surfaces which you are not intending to coat. Some carefully apply and then spread the product, and some decide to tape and use anything from towels to split garbage bags, and some will use bodyshop masking paper/plastic sheeting etc.... To be honest, there is more than one way to skin this cat, and my method is just one that is not only safe and economical, but also serves a dual purpose (you will see later).

The Process

As per manufacturer recommendation you need a clean surface, void of anything that could interfere with the proper bonding on the Fabric coating. The cleaning process I use is simple:
  1. A good rinsing
  2. A diluted APC scrub (10:1)
  3. A THOROUGH rinsing!!!!!
  4. A wash with CarPro Reset (which does not leave detergents/surfactants behind)
  5. A THOROUGH rinsing!!!!!
  6. A drying process using MF waffle weaves and my trusty MasterBlaster (paying specific attention to the seams)

Once the top is completely dry, then comes the taping (of the appropriate areas) and the protection of all the surfaces which won't be coated. So what is my method? Well, I actually use old bed sheets which I tuck and pinch between the frame and windows and the actual top. ( I unlatch the top, tuck under and latch one side back down to keep the sheet in place)

It may look like an overkill but you will see the reason after.

As you can see from the backview I pre-taped the rear window. I find it much easier to tape the back window and then fold an old split pillow case, which I tape to the base tape. This is much easier than to try and fold and tape to the edges the pillow case itself, trying to follow the contour of the glass perfectly.

As you can see from the photo above, you simply need to fold the edge and don't have to be very meticulous when taping to the base tape.

Now comes process of applying the product. The process I use is pretty straight forward

  1. A quick 15% IPA wipedown (making sure it is completely dry before proceeding to the next step)
  2. Shake the CQuartz Fabric bottle and apply a THIN layer of the product making sure to overlap passes and applying well to the edges and seams
  3. I then use a small sponge to "massage" the product in the fabric. I use a multi-directional small circular action with enough pressure.
  4. Next comes a second layer, also applied THIN (which is applied perpendicular to the previous layer)
  5. For the second layer I use a nitrile glove to "massage" the product into the weave paying specific attention to the edges and seams.

One point of precaution is that you need to make sure and apply the product in a well ventilated area. Ask me how I know

After application, enough time needs to be allowed for the coating to cure before exposing to water. You can use IR lamps (or the sun) to "bake" the coating (speed cure) or you can simply keep it away from the elements for 12hrs (which is what I normally do).

What are the intended benefits??

  1. To create a Super Hydrophobic barrier which repels water instantly (and prevent water damage to the fibers)
  2. Wear resistance: increases the fabric wear capacity
  3. Chemical resistance (Acid rain, detergents and other chemicals)
  4. UV protections (protects against UV fading)
  5. Resists bacteria growth
  6. Requires less cleaning: In most cases simply wipe with a damp towel
  7. Versatility: Suitable for a variety of textiles such as fabric upholstery, carpets, mats, & convertible fabric tops (not intended for vinyl tops)
  8. Long lasting protection: 1+ year, depending on exposure and maintenance

How does it look in action? If a picture is worth 1000 words, what about a video ?

Care and Maintenance.

Once the product is cured the maintenance is a BREEZE. A simple damp MF is all you need in most cases, although bird bombs may require a good spraying. A quality soap which does not contain waxes or silicones is recommended. Note that those soaps do not "remove" the coating but rather interfere with its function. Basically the surface would take on the characteristics of the wax/silicones temporarily (until they wear away or until they are removed, restoring the characteristics of the coating).

Do not forget that the coating is chemical resistant and not chemical proof, which means that products with pH <4 or="">12 will affect the longevity of the coating.

Application note: Make sure to apply THIN! This product unlike it predecessor will leave a sticky surface if the product is applied too thick.

Are you interested in knowing the dual purpose of the oversized bed sheet? Well, here it is..... I always do the work on the top first and then go about polishing and coating the vehicle. I normally tape the car before tucking the sheets so that once the top is cure (overnight) I can simply lift the sheet and wrap/protect the top just like a nice little gift. That way I can proceed with the polishing without worrying about flying compound, compounding dust etc....

Hope you enjoyed! I am sure that I missed something so feel free to comment, criticize and ask questions....

ADDENDUM: I wanted to add this addendum since the question was asked of me before, and I thought it is important to answer it preemptively. This Fabric coating coats the fibers but is non-clogging (which helps maintain the fabric suppleness). As such, the weave of the fabric is maintained and water will eventually intrude those spaces between the fibers. After enough exposure to water (or if the water is driven in the fabric) the fabric will appear to be saturated. This saturation effect is due to the hydrophilic nature of water. Once water intrude the fabric weave, it will attract itself puddling at first and then saturating the fabric weave. If you look back on the video, you will at first note the superhydrophobic quality, but upon further inspection you will note a puddling effect where the water hits the canvas. What is not shown on this video is the fact that a gentle tap on the top helps drive the water away from the weave and restore the hydrophobic characteristics. In essence, it is not because the fabric appears wet/saturated that the coating has failed. Since I don't have a personal example of what I am talking about I will share a CarPro video which shows how the behavior of the coating change once APC was introduced, however a good washing and drying (driving the water out) restores the superhydrophobicity (the test starts at around 5:00). The APC surfactants affect the surface tension of water and allows intrusion in the coated fabric. This "saturation effect" is noticeable sooner in looser weaves, whereas seems almost non-existent in tight weaves (like the suede MF media in the video) until it is exposed to "something" that affects its surface tension. REGARDLESS, the coating did not fail and its protection value still remain. The only way around this (from what I understand) would be to have a product that "clogs" the fabric weave which ultimately would affect the flexibility and suppleness of the textile.

An Evolution in Ceramic Nanotech Paint Coatings

About CQuartz FINEST paint coating

Learn more about why CQuartz FINEST is the most exclusive automotive surface protection in the world!

Many people are familiar with carnauba wax and more recently polymer sealants as a means of protecting their vehicle.  These products offer some protection from UV and the environment but they are not in the same league with CQuartz Finest.  Unlike waxes and sealants, CQ Finest adds a measurable 3µm thickness of condensed SiO2 nano particles with a proprietary bonding agent to create the Finest Ceramic Quartz coating.  Unlike the durability of wax and sealants which is measured in months CQuartz durability is measured in years!

CQ FINEST is an evolution in nanotech ceramic paint coatings.  In the development of Finest, high strength, condensed nano particles with superior cross linking abilities were designed utilizing a new proprietary nano material to create an extremely tough 3D structure providing a durable, super high gloss coating which protects paint and other automotive surfaces from UVA and UVB rays, dirt, brake dust, iron contaminants, bugs, bird droppings, tar, and all sorts of environmental contaminants for two years.

Complete Protection

Nano Structure

Paint Structure

Hydrophobic

One of the most important features in keeping your vehicle clean is the ability of the protective layer to release water.  Finest features a low sliding angle which allows water drops to release easily causing an extreme lotus affect.

Gloss

CQuartz Finest has developed a reputation among professionals as the richest, deepest, highest gloss coating available. It is important to note that proper depth and gloss is achieved with proper correction and polishing by an experience detailer with a passion for what they do.  However after they have invested countless hours in their craft, it is only fitting to both protect their work long term and add that extra rich depth of the Finest coating available.

Protection From Bugs

They come in all shapes and sizes.  Many are highly acidic and can wreak havoc on your paint!  They impact the front of your vehicle at high speed and as their body’s explode the acidic contents spills out onto your paint.  Within minutes it can eat through a layer of traditional wax before it dries and bonds hard to the surface in the heat of the sun.  If the bug is highly acidic it will begin the process of etching into your clearcoat in a matter of hours.  Each time it is exposed to moisture more acids are released and eventually you have permanent damage to your paint.

With 3µm of CQuartz Finest between the bugs and your paint they can no longer cause permanent damage to your paint.  To start with the coating is resistant to acids and its rare any mark will be left on the coating with reasonable washing schedules.  In the rare case a bug does leave something behind you can be rest assured your paint is still safe beneath the coating.

Easier Maintenance

As we touched on previously: dust, dirt, and contaminants do not bond to your CQuartz Finest barrier in the way they do to paint with only a coat of wax or sealant applied.  Any dirt or dust that does attach to the coating is MUCH more easily removed upon the next wash without having to scrub or clay the vehicle.  CQuartz Finest offers dirt and water shedding abilities beyond that of any other product available.   With the self-cleaning affect provided by CQuartz Finest, most dirt slides right off during a wash.

Fine Swirl Resistance

Waxes and sealants obviously offer no swirl resistance.  When you wash, dry, or touch your paint at any time you have the potential to scratch the surface.  The scratches we are talking about here are very fine and referred to as “swirls” but as they build up the level of gloss you see as reflections and depth to your paint withers.  These swirls refract light away from your eyes which is the cause of a dulled appearance to your paint.

CQuartz Finest has been proven to resist these fine swirls when properly maintained and cared for.  It should be noted that no coating is swirl proof and it is important to use only high quality wash mitts and drying towels or a blower.

We highly recommend allowing your Authorized Finest Installer to either maintain your vehicle or train you in proper wash techniques and provide access for purchase of the incredibly soft and plush CarPro Merino Wool Wash Mitt.

Exclusivity

Unlike other coatings, Finest cannot be purchased on the open market and is installed by only CarPro Authorized Finest Installers who have honed their skills so they may polish your paint to the highest level before protecting it with Finest.

CQuartz Finest is the most exclusive coating available worldwide.

CarPro Finest Installers make up a global network of professionals who proudly offer a warranty on our flagship coating.  This warranty states that Finest will not bubble, yellow, peel, or oxidize.

Protection From Bird Droppings

The most dangerous enemy your paint will likely see in its life is bird droppings.  They can vary in level of toxicity but it is well known by professionals that a bird dropping can dissolve wax on contact, eat deep into paint, and leave an etching within minutes.  With CQuartz Finest you have a barrier which resists bird droppings and allows you time to discover and remove them so they cannot cause permanent damage to your paint.

Dust and Dirt Resistance

Anybody that has just waxed their car will tell you – within a couple hours they can see the dust building up on it and after a drive that dust is still there.  It doesn’t blow off and it does accumulate on the carnauba wax layer.  Polymer sealants are a little better and stay cleaner than waxes however they too allow dirt and dust to stick to them.  Compared to wax, dust and dirt retention is lowered up to 90% with CQuartz Finest.  Of course some will gather and collect over time but you will enjoy the beauty of your vehicle between washes when protected by Finest where as with other products the paint will look dirty faster.

Protection from rail, brake dust, and environmental contaminants:

In the air around us and on the highways, all sorts of contaminants attack your paint.  Iron particles coming off the brakes of other vehicles can lodge into your paint and allow moisture to penetrate around them.  Over time the oxidation process from moisture and sun break down around these iron particles and eat microscopic holes into your paint. CQ Finest puts an end to this with a thick barrier that does not allow these contaminants to reach the paint surface and are removed much more easily.

Finest Service

Your Finest Authorized Detailer uses only top tier products on your vehicle.  They start with a high level auto wash followed by an extremely detailed 2-3 step decontamination process to remove all bonded contaminants from above and beneath the surface of the paint.

Following the “decon” process the paint is further analyzed and the best combinations of high tech pads and polishes are tested to produce the highest gloss possible.  This may include polishing the entire vehicle 2 and sometimes 3 times to reach this level.

After the paint is perfected all the polishing oils are stripped from the vehicle with the use of CarPro Eraser.  This step is essential so that CQ Finest will fully bond with the paint.  When the paint is determined to be 100% oil free, 2 thick layers of CQ Finest are applied.

Additional services including coating of interior, glass, convertible top, plastic trim, brightwork, and wheel coating are also offered by our installers.  Some of these items may be included in your Finest package or may be offered À la carte.  Ask your Finest installer for more details.

CarPro Finest Installers make up a global network of professionals who proudly offer a warranty on our flagship coating.  This warranty states that Finest will not bubble, yellow, peel, oxidize, or lose more than 20% gloss over 2 years.
