House Passes SAVE Act: Proof of Citizenship Required for Voter Registration

In a significant move, the House approved the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act on Wednesday, which mandates proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote. This measure has faced strong opposition from top Democrats and the White House, despite evidence of non-citizens casting ballots in federal elections.

The bill saw support from 216 Republicans and five Democrats, including swing-district Representatives Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas), Jared Golden (D-Maine), Don Davis (D-NC), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.), who crossed party lines to vote in favor. However, 198 Democrats opposed the bill.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) expressed his views on the matter, stating, “Today, 198 House Democrats voted against preventing illegal aliens from voting in American elections. Over the past four years, Joe Biden has welcomed millions upon millions of illegals into the country, knowing that non-citizens only have to check a box to vote in a federal election.”

Johnson continued, “We have long known this was an intentional effort to turn them into voters, and now the American people know where every member of Congress stands on this critically important issue. House Republicans believe that only Americans should vote in American elections. House Democrats have now proven they believe that illegal aliens should vote in American elections.”

This vote highlights the ongoing debate over voter eligibility and the measures needed to ensure the integrity of American elections.
