How to Kitesurf, Beginner's Series

How to use the Wind Window in kiteboarding

The wind window is the fundamental theory behind kiteboarding. Kites fly within the wind window, so you must learn how to manage the edge/neutral zone, the intermediate/soft zone, and the power zone.

What is the wind window? How do kiteboarders use the wind window to speed up and change directions? Understanding the concept of the wind window is critical if you want to progress in the sport of kiteboarding.

Basically, the wind window is the name given to the three-dimensional area downwind of the pilot that the kite can fly in. The length of the kite lines will determine the radius of that a particular wind window.

So, the longer the line, the larger the radius of the wind window. That is why kiteboarders use the clock - from 9 to 3 o'clock - to get the exact location of the kite above the water.

The three main zones of wind window will effectively impact the power of the kite. Mastering the intuitive technique of getting the kite where you want it to be will get you full control of the sport.

The three wind window zones are:

1. The Edge/Neutral Zone: in good winds, the kite can remain in stationary flight in this zone, producing little or no power.
2. The Intermediate/Soft Zone: the area downwind of the neutral zone, where the kite starts to move dynamically and produces power; the power generated within the intermediate zone is gradual, increasing the closer it is to the center point of the window or power zone.
3. The Power Zone: the most powerful area within the wind window and is used with sensible control; this zone is rarely needed except in light winds and when performing advanced tricks; the kite cannot be paused or stopped in this zone and will continue to fly towards the neutral zone.

If you're launching or landing a kite, you'll need to get it to the edge/neutral zone. A water start will require your kite to be in the power zone. You should not get your kite at 12 o'clock (Zenith) when at the beach.

If you're looking for maximum speed, send your kite into the power zone at between 9h30 and 10 o'clock. But remember, don't get overpowered in strong winds or violent wind gust conditions.

Never underestimate safety issues. Take a look at the Self Rescue and Pack Down kiteboarding guide, and learn the kite rules and safety sailing procedures.

One Kiteboarder’s Quest To Jump Over Happy Island

For a regular traveler there are more than enough reasons to visit Happy Island—the man-made islet devoted to drinking rum and having a good time.

There’s Janti, the jovial live-in proprietor of this unique watering hole. There’s Janti’s world-famous rum punches. There’s the epic barbecues. There’s the location, with the island beautifully set at the opening of Clifton Harbour off Union Island. There’s the history of Happy Island and its genesis as a pile of discarded conch shells.

As I said, all these reasons would be more than enough for me to make the trip back to the magnificent Grenadines, but for Pro Kiteboarder Jeremie Tronet, those weren’t enough.

With the opening of JT Pro Center kitesurfing school on Union Island (what Steve called The Caribbean’s Most Uncommon Kiteboarding School), Jeremie spends practically every day kiting in the waters off Happy Island’s doorstep. Just add a little rum punch and a lot of adrenaline and you have a recipe for a “what if…” conversation. Specifically:

What if I jumped Happy Island?

Mountains are there to be climbed. Challenges are there to be overcome. And Happy Island is there to be jumped!

See Jeremie’s jump attempt above,

STORY FROM:
Uncommon Caribbean
https://www.uncommoncaribbean.com/

Steve and Patrick Bennett of Uncommon Caribbean

Never been to the Caribbean? Been on a quick cruise? Maybe you’ve been traveling in the region for years? Whatever your level of experience with the West Indies, there’s a good chance many of the cultural idiosyncrasies and unique experiences to be had in the region have gone under your radar.
Why?
For years, the Caribbean has been marketed by those not native to these immaculate shores as nothing but sand, sun and cheap rum. All good things (well, except the bad rum part), but that barely scratches the surface!
Welcome to Uncommon Caribbean, a celebration of the undiscovered charms of the Antilles! From the unexpected (surfing a la Martinique?) to the downright bizarre (St. Croix’s beer-drinking pigs), Uncommon Caribbean offers an engaging journey beyond the region’s well-trod sun, sand and sea attractions to reveal a unique side of the Caribbean seldom featured in traditional travel guides.

Located in St.Vincent & The Grenadines, just a few hundred meters from Union Island, Happy is a man made island. Janti decided to make use of discarded conch (lambi) shells and he created an entire island by piling them up in the sea. Today there is a beautiful restaurant / pool bar and a couple of rooms on the island! You just gotta check out this video!
