What, when and how you eat can have a significant impact on your health and overall well-being. Watch as Sadhguru explains the science of eating and fasting for a healthy and vibrant life.
Some of the greatest athletes and prolific achievers of this generation has one unusual trait that most people would consider outright stupid. They only eat one meal a day. Now before you start commenting about how bad and dangerous this is, just hear me out first because I have some rather shocking information that these great achievers are using to their advantage. Eating one meal a day is a disaster for unhealthy food corporations and pharmaceutical industries because they’ll go bankrupt if the majority of people followed this advice. While at the same time dramatically enhance your cognitive function along with physical well being. So in this video I’ll show you why everything you thought you knew about food is wrong, and why top athletes and high achievers only eat one meal a day.
This kind of eating is an extended type of intermittent fasting where they consume calories for about an hour a day and fast for the remaining 23 hours, and they usually eat in the evening. That means no breakfast, no lunch and no eating before working out. But don’t you need to eat before working out to have good results? Well not really. It might make you feel better since you’re used to it but it’s definitely not required. Now granted this type of diet is not for everyone but you might want to give it a go since it has some crazy benefits and some of greatest athletes are doing it.
Ronda Rousey is or was doing the OMAD diet when she was competing at her peak when she absolutely destroyed her competition in both Strikeforce and the UFC. After becoming the first female american to get an olympic medal in Judo in 2008 she went on to dominate MMA for a number of years. And she explains one of her secrets for her huge success in an interview with MMA Mania. She says:
"It's kind of a combination of The Paleo and The Warrior diet. I pretty much eat one meal a day - which takes place at night... There is one exception to all of this each day: I get to have coffee every morning.
She continues to say that she she can get more out her training on an empty stomach than she would on a full stomach.
Another top athlete that follows the OMAD diet is Kohei Uchimura, a seven-time olympic medalist, 19-time world medalist and by many considered to be the greatest gymnast of all time. He recently also revealed that he only eats one time per day which came as huge surprise for most people. Before he gets to destroy his first and only meal of the day he has worked out not once but two times already. Another advantage having an empty stomach is that it he doesn’t get sick from all the spinning and flipping he does, and he says that he feels like he’s in a good state training on an empty stomach.
The same goes for Gen. Stanley McChrystal who was special operations commander and also overseeing NATO forces in afghanistan. He thinks It’s extremely convenient to not have to cook and eat several meals a day and it keeps him in peak physical condition.
Eating one meal a day can also dramatically enhances the cognitive function and mental clarity because in that fasted state, it forces the brain to get its fuel from ketone bodies in a process called gluconeogenesis, and happens when other energy sources are depleted. Ketones are actually the prefered source of energy for both the brain and body and can make your brain run up to 70 % more efficiently than on blood sugar and glucose. Autophagy And Fasting | Your Health Depends On It is a video that explains the benefits that autophagy and how to activate autophagy in your body.
Autophagy and fasting is an incredible topic that is life changing to say the least. I have said it for years that fasting is one of the most valuable things that we can do for our health simply because this incredible process known as autophagy.
Autophagy and fasting was a Nobel prize won by a Japanese scientist that spent the bulk of his career understanding this process known as autophagy. The autophagy benefits seem to be lost in translation through difficult to understand online tutorials, but this video offers you the autophagy and fasting; the mystery and explained truth.
Autophagy has incredible benefits in the body that include cleaning up damaged and precancerous cells. It also has benefits on your immune system, acting as a complete reset with as little as a 4 days water fast. Autophagy is also proven to lower all inflammation markers within the body and if that wasn't enough, it is proven to support neurological function by supporting proper brain function and preventing serious neurological conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease.
Autophagy intermittent fasting is a serious deal simply because we know that autophagy is activated in the body with as little as a 13 hour fast, but the rule of thumb most research points to is 18 hours. Autophagy is also activated through high intensity interval training. When it comes to how to renew your body with fasting and autophagy, this video is your answer to better health.
The practice of fasting for purification and health can be traced back as far as early as ancient Greece. The great philosopher, Pythagoras, required all his disciples to first purify themselves through fasting. Plato said, “I fast for greater physical and mental efficiency.” Plutarch said, "Instead of using medicine, rather, fast a day." The Spiritual master, Pythagoras required all his disciples to first purify themselves through fasting. The founder of modern medicine, Hippocrates, prescribed either a strict fast with nothing but water or medicinal teas, or a very slender liquid diet. He said: "Everyone has a physician inside him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food. But to eat when you are sick is to feed your sickness."
One professor of Egyptology - Waseem al-Sisi, notes that Ancient Egyptians used to fast for a total of 30 days each year. They practiced this as an exercise in self-control, which, he says, meant they considered a moral law.
Many of the world’s great religions practice fasting to purify body and mind as well: The Hindi, Baha’i, Buddhists, and Taoists and Christians. The Bible mentions several 40-day fasts, including those done by Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. In Judaism, Yom Kippur is a fast for atonement, and in Islam, fasting for Ramadan is an expression of devotion. Historically, these fasts were conducted to purify the mind and body. How does this work?
Intermediate fasting how it works for me, video by Buddy Huggins
*NOTE* One of the key things in being able to fast in a healthy matter is entering the state of ketosis - that is, switching your metabolism from burning carbohydrate to burning fat. *Considering most people have been burning carbohydrate their whole lives* this can make fasting a challenge. Upton Sinclair recommends doing quite long fasts - 12 days, but you may want to work your way up to longer fasts. Unless you are relatively keto adapted (or have experience with fasting of course), it's important that you take precautions while doing a fast. Fasting isn't inherently dangerous, *but diving into fasting when your body is in no way geared for it can be.* I recommend doing more research before doing longer fasts. "The Complete Guide to Fasting" (http://amzn.to/2tQjxXa) is a good book to start with.
As Tim Ferriss puts it: Please don't do anything stupid and kill yourself. It would make us both quite unhappy.
Just in case I should also say that of course you need to balance fasting with eating - You need to survive off of something. I have been doing intermittent fasting the past year (22 hours fasted, 2 hours eating - you can widen it to 16/8, which still provides great benefits) and will fast for a couple days every other month or so. Several other people have recommend a routine like this - Tim Ferriss recommends doing a 3 day fast once per month and a 7 day fast once per year.
Also make sure you're getting enough fat, protein, micronutrients and fiber to maintain a healthy weight and healthy body - *excessive* fasting can be very dangerous.

In fact at age 41, he got into an auto accident that left him nearly crippled and 40+ pounds overweight. He could barely walk and he had very little use of his arms. Each day he experienced un-ending, excruciating pain. In the span of a few months, he spent a sizable fortune on the best medical care he could find, but nothing seemed to help. No form of "traditional" therapy or medicine relieved his suffering and pain. Because of his vast resources, this man began searching for alternative healing remedies and technologies all over the world. He spent many MILLIONS of dollars trying and testing everything he could find. He bought: 100's of different healing machines, medicinal healing herbs, 25 different water filters. He found an out of print book that changed his life forever.
